Arthur Fagen’s newest Naxos recording with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra has just been released. This project features works exclusively by Black composers: William Dawson Levi and Ulysses Kay. An awareness of these compositions is important, especially in these times. Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony, a sadly neglected major American symphony and Kay’s Fantasy Variations and Umbrian Scene comprise a lesser-known, yet important part of the 20th century American orchestral repertory. It is now available for streaming and to order.
In addition, Naxos label released in March another jewel not to be missed: the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Arthur Fagen performing four pieces by Morton Gould.
The critics were quick to offer praise for both performances, please see press quotes.
